about
This originated as an attempted homage to Jlin's captivating Black Origami album, but I ended up using it as the basis for this, written after Rochester's town hall on September 12th, 2017. After watching the live stream for an hour, I was surprised at the condescension that the president of the University, Joel Seligman, displayed for students. Angry mob, promises to "look into that", et al. Regardless of the specifics of the case and investigations, taken at face value, it was disappointing and often painful to watch.
The song is intended as something as an internal monologue for Seligman himself, as I was somewhat fascinated by a man who, in an attempt to stay within legal boundaries, backs himself into an extremely volatile, pressure-filled corner.
That, or he's an edgy emo person in this song, I guess. If that's the case, perhaps I projected a bit too much of myself in here, as songwriters tend to do...
That said, I don't consider this a 'political song' - "Hang On, Hang On" is more just me trying to process the events of this week, even if I wasn't technically there.
lyrics
Hang on, hang on
Your righteousness is killing me
You just don't seem to get it
that this is just reality
I'm interrupted by laughter
I'm interrupted by applause
Of course I hear everything you're saying
But there are rules and there are laws
You think I can't understand it
you think I don't know how you feel
You think that I don't seem to get it
But you are *so* brave and sincere
I'm taking steps, I'll get around to changing things
but I'm interrupted yet again
By hecklers on the side who think that i don't realize
This is only where it begins
If put a word wrong
It always cancels out
I know they will not forget
I will still wait it out
